How Chelsea could line up against Atletico Madrid

Sports Mole looks at how Chelsea could line up in Tuesday's Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea will face Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League clash on Tuesday night, with the Blues looking for an advantage to take back to London.

The Premier League outfit will enter the match off the back of a 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday afternoon, which stretched their unbeaten run under Thomas Tuchel to seven matches.

The Blues will technically be the away team on Tuesday, but the match is taking place in Romania rather than Spain due to coronavirus protocols over travel.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the English side could line up in Bucharest.

Chelsea had hoped that experienced defender Thiago Silva would return to the starting XI following a muscular problem, but the Brazilian international has not made the trip to Romania.

As a result, Andreas Christensen is likely to be handed a starting role alongside Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger at the back, although Kurt Zouma is also pushing for a spot in the side.

Christian Pulisic and Kai Havertz had been doubts due to recent issues, but both players have been included in the travelling squad. Neither Pulisic nor Havertz are expected to start, though, with Mason Mount and Timo Werner set to continue in the attacking positions.

Tammy Abraham was substituted at the interval on Saturday but is not injured, and the Englishman could be handed the centre-forward role, while N'Golo Kante is pushing to feature alongside Jorginho in central midfield.

Tuchel also has decisions to make in the wing-back areas; Reece James should start on the right, while Marcos Alonso could again edge out Ben Chilwell to feature on the left.

Olivier Giroud, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech are also options for change, but Tuchel is expected to resist the temptation to shuffle his pack for the clash with the La Liga leaders.
