Number 20 seed Dominic Thiem earns his place in the second round of the US Open by beating Daniel Gimeno-Traver in straight sets at Flushing Meadows.

Dominic Thiem has secured his place in the second round of the US Open with a straight-sets victory over Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

The number 20 seed took the game to the Spaniard in the first set and earned a break of serve, but Gimeno-Traver battled back to tie the set. However, Thiem upped the ante to break again to secure the first set.

The second set proved to be straightforward for Thiem as he was dominant on his serve and managed to put enough pressure on Gimeno-Traver to secure the break to clinch the set 6-3.

The two competitors played out a tight contest in the third set the scores were level at 5-5, with a tie-breaker on the cards. However, the Austrian produced quality tennis at the right moment to earn a break to secure the match 7-5 6-3 7-5.

Thiem will face Denis Istomin or Benjamin Becker in the second round.
