Lewis Hamilton takes pole position at Silverstone for British Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton takes pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix at Silverstone after coming out on top in qualifying.

Lewis Hamilton has finished ahead of Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg to claim pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix on home soil.

The two drivers raced ahead of the chasing pack, but it was the home favourite who ousted his opponent by 0.319s to take top spot in qualifying.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo ended in third and fourth place, meanwhile, and there was a fifth-place finish for Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari.

Hamilton saw his first lap time in the shootout erased for exceeding track limits, yet he was still able to nail his final lap to put himself in a strong position to further close the gap on Rosberg this weekend.

It is the fourth time Hamilton has been on pole at Silverstone, setting up a tense battle just a week on from an action-packed race in Austria which the Brit controversially won.
