Preview: Wycombe Wanderers vs. Luton Town - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship clash between Wycombe Wanderers and Luton Town, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Wycombe Wanderers play host to Luton Town on Saturday afternoon looking to extend their winning streak in the Championship to three matches.

Although Luton have already reached the 50-point mark, Nathan Jones will want to end a two-match losing streak as soon as possible as the Hatters bid to end an excellent season on a high.

On a day when his side thrashed rivals Rotherham United on away territory, Gareth Ainsworth would have felt a tinge of disappointment on the coach back to Adams Park after Coventry City's win over Bristol City.

The result at St Andrew's ensured that the Sky Blues remained nine points clear of the Chairboys with a game in hand, effectively cancelling out Wycombe's stunning result at the New York Stadium.

Nevertheless, Ainsworth must treat the result in isolation at a time when his players are producing far above what was expected of them after a difficult campaign in the Championship.

Ainsworth will feel that five wins are required from their last six games to have a chance to avoiding the drop, a daunting ask given the level of opposition which awaits them.

However, as well as scoring three goals in a match for just the third time this season, Wycombe have now kept four clean sheets in five games.

From Luton's perspective, it is only natural that motivation may be lacking after all-but-securing survival with six matches to spare.

Jones has worked wonders to take the club from near-relegation certainties when he arrived to a team which now seems capable of establishing themselves in mid-table.

However, the Welshman will be aware that a disappointing end to the campaign could linger ahead of next season, leaving him under pressure to lift a group of players which have lost four of their last six games.

On a positive note, Luton have conceded just five times in as many matches, a strong defensive record making up for their lack of goals in the final third.

Team News

Ainsworth has revealed that Dominic Gape will again miss out with the calf injury which he sustained at the beginning of the month.

However, Joe Jacobson is expected to keep his place at left-back, despite being forced off through injury during the first half at Rotherham.

David Wheeler could take the place of Anis Mehmeti after scoring as a substitute at the New York Stadium.

James Collins will almost certainly return to the Luton team, taking the place of Sam Nombe who made his first Championship start versus Barnsley.

With Jones promising to be "ruthless" with his team selection going forward, Sonny Bradley, Harry Cornick, Luke Berry and Kazenga LuaLua may all be handed recalls.

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Stockdale; McCarthy, Grimmer, Knight, Jacobson; Adeniran, Thompson; Muskwe, Wheeler, Onyedinma; Ikpeazu

Luton Town possible starting lineup:
Sluga; Bree, Pearson, Naismith, Cranie; Mpanzu, Rea, Dewsbury-Hall; Cornick, Collins, LuaLua

We say: Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 Luton Town

Despite their respective league positions, we can only back Wycombe to prevail on Saturday afternoon. Ainsworth will throw caution to the wind, and his team are currently playing with the confidence to produce some quality in the final third.
