Welling United earn vital win over Wrexham

Welling United move out of the relegation zone in the Conference Premier after holding on for a 2-1 win against Wrexham.

Two early goals have helped struggling Welling United to a vital 2-1 triumph over Wrexham.

Welling went into the fixture knowing that three points would move them above Alfreton Town and out of the drop zone, and it took the home side just 20 minutes to establish a two-goal advantage.

Seven minutes had passed when Sam Berry scored a header at the back post from a Dominic Vose cross, before Vose got on the scoresheet himself when firing an effort off the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

Wrexham had openings through Andy Bishop and Sam Finley, but Welling managed to get to half time with their clear lead still intact.

The Welsh outfit continued their search for a goal soon after the restart when Neil Ashton hit a shot over with his weaker right foot, before Kieron St Aimie did the same for Welling at the other end.

Back came Wrexham, who created opportunities through Connor Jennings and Louis Moult, but after they went begging, Welling looked like they would enjoy a comfortable final 10 minutes.

However, Wrexham finally halved the deficit through a powerful finish from Bishop leaving Welling to fight for their win, but they eventually held on to leave their fate in their own hands heading into the final two games of the season.
