FIFA backs Russia for 2018 World Cup

FIFA says that the next World Cup will not be moved from Russia, following calls for the country to be stripped of the tournament.

FIFA has insisted that the 2018 World Cup will still be held in Russia, despite the ongoing troubles in the country.

Following the recent Malaysian Airlines disaster there have been widespread calls for Russia to be stripped of the tournament, but FIFA has said that this would do more harm than good.

"As a world governing body of football FIFA takes its responsibility in governing football seriously and we support any peaceful and democratic debate," FIFA said in a statement.

"FIFA deplores any form of violence and will continue to use its tournaments to promote dialogue, understanding and peace among peoples.

"History has shown so far that boycotting sport events or a policy of isolation or confrontation are not the most effective ways to solve problems."

There has also been widespread criticism over FIFA's decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
