Wigan Athletic maintained their impressive finish to the Premier League season with a 3-2 victory over basement club Wolves.

Wolves pulled a surprise out of the hat early on, stunning Roberto Martinez's in-form side with a superb opener from Matt Jarvis. The midfielder found space on the edge of the box and curled the ball into the top corner.

Wigan were only behind for four minutes. James McCarthy's pass found Franco Di Santo, whose crisp shot found the bottom corner to level the score at 1-1.

The Latics edged their noses in front just one minute later when Jean Beasejour's cross found the head of Emmerson Boyce, putting the home team in the driving seat.

Wigan should have been another goal to the good on 25 minutes when Beasejour raced down the flank and teed up Di Santo for a golden opportunity, but Richard Stearman got his body in the way for a vital interception.

Martinez's men were back on the attack after the break. Shaun Maloney linked up with Beausejour to create another chance for Di Santo, who was only able to drag his shot wide of the mark.

Wigan continued to press and had the better of the second half possession, but the visitor's defence held firm, restricting their opposition to long-range efforts. When one from Maloney was goal-bound, Wolves keeper Dorus De Vries was equal to it.

The Latics' pressure finally paid off on 75 minutes when Emmerson Boyce helped himself to his second of the afternoon. The Barbados international found the top corner from the edge of the area to claim the goal of the day.

Wolves did pull a goal back late on through Steven Fletcher for 3-2, but Wigan held on to maintain their impressive finish to the season.
