Wigan Athletic captain Emmerson Boyce: 'We've hit jackpot with Malky Mackay'

Wigan Athletic captain Emmerson Boyce believes that the club have "hit the jackpot" in getting Malky Mackay as manager, despite the controversial appointment.

Wigan Athletic captain Emmerson Boyce believes that Malky Mackay's appointment as manager is a positive move forward by the club.

The decision to hire the Scotsman as Uwe Rosler's successor has been met with criticism following the recent text scandal, which is in relation to his previous term as Cardiff City boss.

Mackay, who was sacked by Cardiff in December last year, is under investigation by the Football Association after allegedly sending text messages of a racist, homophobic and sexist nature.

Despite the controversy, Boyce wrote in his Wigan Evening Post column: "Looking at Malky's record, I think Wigan have hit the jackpot in getting him here.

"We all read the papers and we've seen what's happened, but all we can do is concentrate on our jobs, listen to him and hope he guides us in the right direction. People make mistakes, things happen, and if he can get us promoted then I'm sure people will be talking about the positives rather than the negatives."

Meanwhile, Wigan chairman Dave Whelan is the subject of an FA investigation after he was accused of making anti-semitic comments in a newspaper interview.
