Wigan vs Peterborough - prediction, team news, lineups

Wigan Athletic will be looking to continue their unbeaten home record when they welcome Peterborough United to the Brick Community Stadium this Saturday.

The Latics are setting sights on their third straight home win across all competitions, while the Posh are looking to shake off a three-match losing run.

Match preview

If Wigan are to achieve anything of note this season, turning the Brick Community Stadium into a fortress will certainly aid their ambitions.

The Latics have made a strong start in that regard, winning their first two games in front of their home fans and scoring four goals along the way.

Three of those goals came in their League One season opener against Northampton Town as they thumped the visitors 3-1.

Ryan Lowe’s men faced a disappointing 2-0 defeat away at Leyton Orient a week later, but the side quickly bounced back with a 1-0 victory over Notts County in the EFL Cup.

The focus shifts back to league duties this weekend as the Latics take on a struggling Peterborough side.

Nothing has gone right for the Posh so far this season, with the team enduring three straight defeats across all competitions.

Darren Ferguson’s men kicked off their League One campaign with a 2-1 defeat away at Cardiff City and followed that up with another 2-0 loss against recent Luton Town.

Things did not improve in the EFL Cup, as Peterborough were knocked out in the opening round courtesy of a 2-1 defeat to Accrington Stanley.

There is a lot of negativity around the Posh ahead of the weekend, though the visitors will take encouragement from the fact they beat Wigan in their last meeting back in January.

Team News

Wigan’s decent start to the season is all the more impressive when you consider the vast number of injuries they are dealing with at this early stage of the campaign.

As things stand, the Latics head into the weekend without Joe Adams, who is still struggling with a knee injury.

Dion Rankine and Matt Smith are also on the sidelines with fitness problems, while Steven Sessegnon misses out through suspension.

James Carragher – the son of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher – is a doubt for the fixture, as is Isaac Mabaya.

Peterborough are also dealing with a few injury problems ahead of this weekend’s trip to Wigan.

Rio Adebisi, for instance, is dealing with a knee injury and is not available. Sam Hughes has an Achilles tendon problem, while Alex Bass also misses out.

To make matters worse, Will Blackmore and Carl Johnston are both doubts as Peterborough look to avoid their fourth straight defeat.

Wigan Athletic possible starting lineup: Tickle; Robinson, Kerr, Weir; Francois; Trevitt, Brenan, Hungbo, Murray; Saydee, Costelloe

Peterborough United possible starting lineup: Bilokapic; Mills, Wallin, Okagbue, Dornelly; Khela, Collins; Lisbie, O’Brien-Brady, Odoh; Ihionvein

We say: Wigan Athletic 2-1 Peterborough United

Wigan are on a good run of home victories, and they will be looking for more when they welcome a poor Peterborough side to their home.

The Posh have lost three straight games across all competitions and are seriously lacking confidence in this early stage of the season. With all that in mind, we are backing the hosts to win.
