David Whelan blasts no relegation suggestions

David Whelan insists that he would withdraw Wigan Athletic from the Premier League should promotion to and relegation from the Premier League be scrapped.

Wigan Athletic chairman David Whelan has branded suggestions that promotion and relegation to and from the Premier League could be scrapped as "stupid".

He has also revealed that he would withdraw the Latics from the top flight should such a rule ever be enforced.

"It's the most stupid suggestion I've ever heard in my life," said the 74-year-old. "If it was to happen I would resign Wigan from the Premier League and go back and play in the Football League.

"It would ruin and kill English football."

Whelan's Wigan were promoted to the Premier League in 2005.
