Gary Caldwell: 'Roberto Martinez can become top manager'

Gary Caldwell says that Roberto Martinez can become a top manager should he leave Wigan Athletic.

Wigan Athletic captain Gary Caldwell is certain that boss Roberto Martinez can become a top manager in the future.

The 39-year-old has told Latics chairman Dave Whelan that he wants to leave the DW Stadium and is currently in talks with Everton about filling their managerial vacancy.

While Caldwell will be sad to see him leave, he has no doubts that Martinez can go on to become one of the best managers in Europe.

"He wants to play football the right way and gives players the freedom to do that and gives you great belief in what you are trying to do," Caldwell told Sky Sports News.

"I think tactically he is one of the best I have worked with. I think he showed that in the Cup final playing against a great Man City team, I think tactically he out-thought [Roberto] Mancini on the day and he won that battle, and I think he can do that in most games.

"He thinks about the game, he is very passionate about the game and players respond to him and give him all they've got. I think definitely he has got the potential to do that [become a top manager]. He is a very young manager still and has got a lot of experience behind him, and that can only be good for him and furthering his career."

Wigan were relegated from the Premier League just three days after winning the FA Cup this season.
