Wigan Athletic have been drawn in the same group as Rubin Kazan in the Europa League group stages.
The Latics are competing in Europe after winning last season's FA Cup, but manager Owen Coyle would have been hoping to avoid a trip to Russia.
The Championship outfit will also face Slovenian side Maribor, who lost in the Champions League playoffs to Viktoria Plzen.
The group is completed by Belgian outfit Zulte Waregem, with the first fixtures taking place on September 19.
