West Ham transfer news: Edson Alvarez’s Fenerbahce medical date ‘revealed’ as Jose Mourinho closes in on summer signing

Mourinho wish granted as £35m West Ham player ‘set for Fenerbahce medical’

West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez is reportedly closing in on a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

The 27-year-old joined the Hammers in the summer of 2023 from Ajax for a reported £35m and has made a total of 73 appearances across all competitions, including 28 Premier League outings last season.

Alvarez represented West Ham during pre-season, but he was an unused substitute as Graham Potter’s side suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to newly-promoted Sunderland in their opening Premier League fixture of the 2025-26 season last weekend.

The Mexico international still has three years remaining on his contract at the London Stadium, but it appears that West Ham’s No.19 is now open to leaving the club.

A top spokesman for West Ham board allegedly told Hammers News earlier this week that reports of an imminent departure for Alvarez are ‘not true’.

However, journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that a deal is ‘done’ for Alvarez to join Fenerbahce on an initial loan deal which includes an option-to-buy clause, believed to be worth €22m (£19m) as per Sky Deutschland reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Despite interest from former club Ajax and Serie A giants Inter Milan, Alvarez has given the green light to join Fenerbahce, with head coach Jose Mourinho said to have been ‘really keen’ to win the race for his signature.

Alvarez is scheduled to fly to Istanbul today (Thursday) for medical tests ahead of completing his temporary switch to a Fenerbahce side who finished second in the Turkish Super Lig last season and drew 0-0 with Benfica in the first leg of their Champions League playoff tie on Wednesday.

West Ham could step up Fernandes pursuit amid Alvarez, Paqueta rumours

The departure of Alvarez is set to see West Ham become a man light in the midfield department, and another midfield exit remains on the cards before the September 1 deadline as Lucas Paqueta is believed to be weighing up his options.

Tomas Soucek, Guido Rodriguez, James Ward-Prowse, Andy Irving and Freddie Potts are all set to remain at West Ham and feature under Potter this season, but the Hammers boss is still keen to bolster his squad.

Southampton’s Matheus Fernandes was the subject of a £30m rejected bid from West Ham earlier this summer, and The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg claims that the Hammers have submitted an improved offer for the midfielder.

However, it remains to be seen whether they have matched Southampton’s asking price for the 21-year-old, who was signed for around £12m last summer and has played in all three competitive games for the Saints this season, scoring in a EFL Cup win over Northampton Town just over a week ago.
