West Bromwich Albion boss Pepe Mel targets European football

West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel says that he is aiming to compete for a place in the Europa League next season.

West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel has revealed ambitions to take the club into the Europa League.

The Spaniard, who was named as Steve Clarke's successor earlier this month, said that he is hoping his side will be competing for a place in the competition this time next year.

"Fighting for places that give access to the Europa League," he told BBC Sport when asked where he believes West Brom will be in 12 months.

"It would be great if WBA could go on and compete in Europe in the future."

The former Real Betis coach went on to say that he is planning to implement a change of style at The Hawthorns, with an emphasis on maintaining possession of the ball.

"We'll be looking to get the ball back as soon as possible and then keeping it. In football, possession of the football is absolutely vital," he added.

"You cannot go throughout 90 minutes of the game without having the ball, we need to get it back as quickly as possible.

"The most important thing is that they [the players] want to do it, that they need to be hungry to adapt to the style."

West Brom have not played in Europe since the 1981-82 season, when they were defeated by Swiss outfit Grasshopper Zurich.
