Austria started brightly but it was Bale who opened the scoring for Wales after 20 minutes.

The Spurs winger chested down a lofted Joe Allen pass before slotting into the bottom corner from close range.

Bale turned provider after the break with a pinpoint cross for substitute Vokes to slam home his fifth international goal.

The visitors kept plugging away and earned a lifeline with 15 minutes left when Marc Janko turned in from close range.

Marko Arnautovic nearly curled in an equaliser late on but Wales held firm to record their second victory under Chris Coleman.
