Auxerre are exploring the possibility of bringing Djibril Cisse back to the club, according to their president Gerard Bourgoin.
The French striker moved to Lazio during the summer from Greek side Panathinaikos but has failed to settle in Serie A, finding the net once in 14 appearances.
Reports in Italy have suggested that the 30-year-old is looking for a move away from the Stadio Olimpico.
"Djibril is one of the players we admire at Auxerre, which is where he was formed, and we know his qualities as a striker," said Bourgoin.
"Recently, Djibril admitted that he dreamed of getting back into the France squad and returning to the French league with Marseille or Auxerre, where he's already played. And if he had to choose, it'd probably be Auxerre.
"He's held out a branch - not a telegraph pole, but it's clear that we've responded to it."
Cisse spent six years with Auxerre before joining Liverpool in 2004.
