Garry Monk: 'Jonjo Shelvey must stay focused'

Garry Monk says that Jonjo Shelvey must work hard to produce his best football in order to nail down a place in Roy Hodgson's England squad for Euro 2016.

Swansea City manager Garry Monk has said that Jonjo Shelvey must keeping working hard in order to nail down a regular place in the England side.

Shelvey was named in Roy Hodgson's squad for the upcoming friendlies against Spain and France on Thursday, giving him the opportunity to add to his four caps, three of which have been won this season.

However, Monk warned the 23-year-old that he must stay grounded and focused if he is to build on his potential and ensure that he is in Hodgson's squad for Euro 2016 next summer.

"He has got to remember that this is the start for him," Monk told the South Wales Evening Post. "I would not say that getting in the squad is the easiest bit, but probably the first step is to make sure that you are playing well enough to get into the squad. Then you have to work even harder to stay in those squads.

"Jonjo has still got a lot to do in terms of cementing his place in that squad and I think that he is well aware of that. He started the season very well, deserved his call-up and like the others he has had a period a little bit below what his best is, but he is still contributing very well.

"In the last two games he has got back to his level, like the others, and he deserves that call-up. He needs to keep working hard and the most important thing is that he produces his best football for the whole season so that he is selected for the summer tournament."

Shelvey has played 90 times for the Swans in all competitions since signing from Liverpool for £5m in 2013, scoring nine goals.
