Garry Monk: 'We should have been further ahead'

Garry Monk regrets missed opportunities

Garry Monk has claimed that Swansea City paid the price for not killing the game off after playing out a 1-1 draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Swansea dominated for much of the first half and took the lead just before the interval with a goal from Bafetimbi Gomis, but Jermain Defoe equalised to ensure the Black Cats avoided a third successive defeat.

Despite missing out on a second victory of the season, Monk was keen to remain positive after watching his side continue their unbeaten run.

"We are a little disappointed in the changing room. We knew that Sunderland would put in a reaction after the criticism that they received," the Swansea boss told BBC Sport.

"The first 20 minutes in the second half was total dominance. We created numerous chances and that's the thing we have to learn from as that's the period when you have to get that second goal.

"I can't be too disappointed as the players have put a lot of effort and quality into the game."

Swansea will now turn their focus to the League Cup ahead of Tuesday's second-round clash with York City.
