Adam Johnson eyes World Cup berth

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson admits that he hopes to be part of the England squad for this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has admitted that he still hopes to be part of England's World Cup squad in Brazil.

The 26-year-old has won 11 caps for his country but has not featured for them since 2012.

However, seven goals in his last nine games for the Black Cats have seen Johnson mooted for a possible recall from Roy Hodgson.

"I have just got to take each week as it comes," he is quoted as saying by BBC Sport. "It's all a bit up in the air - there are that many players to choose from, people in form, people out of form, injuries.

"There's a long way to go and a lot can happen, but as an England player, you always have half an eye on a World Cup in Brazil."

Johnson is expected to start for Sunderland on Sunday when they face Manchester City in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
