Sunderland have reportedly started negotiations with Rennes striker Ola Toivonen over a move to the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats were linked with the Sweden international earlier in the summer, and their disappointing start to the new season means that new arrivals are likely before Tuesday's transfer deadline.
According to the Sunderland Echo, Rennes are keen to sell Toivonen as they want his wages off the bill and Dick Advocaat's side are ready to capitalise by securing his signature.
The report suggests that PAOK were interested in the 29-year-old, but Sunderland are keen on a permanent deal and are in talks with his representatives.
Toivonen scored seven goals in 30 Ligue 1 appearances last season.
