Johnson explains Sunderland move

Winger Adam Johnson has underlined the importance of Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill in his decision to join the Black Cats this summer.

The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year contract with Sunderland, who reportedly paid Manchester City £10m for the England international's services.

"Coming back to the North-East and Martin O'Neill were the two main factors, especially the gaffer and listening to what he had to say to me," said Johnson on Sunderland's official website.

"He made it clear just how much he wanted me to come here. To know that and feel wanted and appreciated made me feel that it was the right choice to sign.

"He knows exactly what he wants from his players and from me personally. Hopefully he'll give me plenty of confidence as well."

Johnson is Sunderland's fourth signing of the summer following the arrival of Steven Fletcher, Carlos Cuellar and Louis Saha at the Stadium of Light.
