Sunderland transfer news: Black Cats 'attempting to hijack' Marseille move for Bundesliga defender

Hijacking Sunderland 'look to steal' top Marseille target

Sunderland are reportedly interested in signing RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida.

The 25-year-old was a regular fixture for Die Roten Bull last season, playing in 24 Bundesliga matches overall, scoring once.

Geertruida only made the permanent switch to the German outfit last summer from Feyenoord, for whom he played 202 games.

Since his debut in March 2023, the defender has also been a key piece in the Netherlands national team, earning 17 caps overall.

Sunderland are up to six points from three matches following their return to the Premier League after victory over Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

Sunderland 'looking to hijack' Marseille move for Geertruida

According to French outlet Footmercato, Sunderland are aiming to secure the services of Geertruida before the end of the summer transfer window.

However, it is understood that Ligue 1 side Marseille are edging close to the signing of the centre-back ahead of their respective deadline.

The report states that Geertruida and the French giants have agreed on personal terms, with the defender a priority target for the club.

It is now supposedly down to Roberto De Zerbi's side and RB Leipzig to shake hands on a suitable financial package for the deal.

A delay in those agreements could allow recently-promoted Sunderland an opportunity to swoop in and bring the talent to the Premier League.

Sunderland's summer business

After eight long years away from the top flight, Sunderland are in no mood to struggle through a relegation battle with a whimper this term.

The North-East giants have made significant signings this summer, bringing international talent such as Granit Xhaka to the Stadium of Light.

Regis Le Bris's troops have the international break to recover before a trip to FA Cup holders Crystal Palace in the Premier League on September 13.
