Sunderland 'to appoint Chris Coleman'

Wales manager Chris Coleman is on the verge of becoming Sunderland's new head coach, according to a report.

Chris Coleman is reportedly on the verge of becoming Sunderland's new head coach.

Coleman, 47, is still the manager of Wales, but his future has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks.

Simon Grayson was appointed manager of the Black Cats during the summer, but managed just one win in 15 Championship matches, which saw him relieved of his duties last month.

According to the Daily Mail, Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain made Coleman his number one target earlier this week, and the Welshman will stand down from the national team before taking charge at the Stadium of Light.

The report claims that Coleman is expected to be confirmed as the club's new head coach by Sunday after informing Wales that he would be leaving after six years in the position.

Coleman led Wales to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, but failed to secure a spot at the 2018 World Cup, and he will take control of a team that are currently bottom of the Championship table on 10 points.
