Sunderland announce that Connor Wickham has not suffered any "serious damage" to his knee after being stretchered off against Manchester United last weekend.

Sunderland have announced that Connor Wickham's injury is not as serious as first thought.

The England Under-21 international was stretchered off the field in the early stages of the Black Cats' 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend.

"Sunderland have announced that further investigations have shown that Connor Wickham has not suffered any serious damage to his knee," read a statement on the club's official website.

"The player has embarked on a rehabilitation programme as he recovers from the injury.

"Wickham left the field at Old Trafford after just 90 seconds on Saturday and underwent scans on Monday."

The Premier League side have not stated how long the striker will be sidelined for as he recovers from his knee injury.
