Sunderland midfielder Adam Johnson arrested on suspicion of under-age sex

Sunderland midfielder Adam Johnson has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

The 27-year-old England international was arrested on Monday.

Johnson remains in custody and is helping Durham Police with their inquiries.

"A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16," said a spokesman for Durham Police. "He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their inquiries."

Three police cars are understood to have arrived at his home in County Durham on Monday morning before searching a garage on the property.
