Gus Poyet: 'Sunderland philosophy paying dividends'

Gus Poyet says that his brand of football is beginning to work at Sunderland after dumping Chelsea out of the Capital One Cup.

Gus Poyet firmly believes that his philosophy at Sunderland is beginning to pay dividends after they eliminated Chelsea from the Capital One Cup at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.

The Black Cats fell behind to a Lee Cattermole own goal, but Fabio Borini's equaliser forced extra time, in which Ki Sung-Yueng scored a late winner to give the Premier League's basement club a 2-1 win. Poyet's side, who have adopted a new style since he took over, now have a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

"That's the way we are going to do it. It's important I can see that the players are doing it all the time," Poyet told the media afterwards. "Even in extra time, even in the last two or three minutes, they were not trying just to go crazy.

"We are trying to play a game because I believe it works, and now [we have to do that] every week, every game.

"It doesn't matter who you play against at every level, if it's Norwich or if it's Carlisle in the [FA] Cup, every single day, and the more we do it, the more difficult we are going to become to play against, I am sure."

Sunderland host Norwich City on Saturday.
