Stevenage confirm Teddy Sheringham will not play in Herts Senior Cup

Stevenage confirm that their 49-year-old manager Teddy Sheringham will not play in their Herts Senior Cup game on Wednesday.

Stevenage have said that Teddy Sheringham only registered as a player for the club "just in case" he was required to take the field.

The 49-year-old manager and his 41-year-old assistant Kevin Watson registered prior to Wednesday's Herts Senior Cup game against Welwyn Garden City.

However, the club have clarified the situation by saying that neither member of the management staff will play any part.

"There's been lots of media speculation today on Teddy dusting off his boots, however we have an update for you," a statement on the club's official Twitter account said.

"Contrary to speculation we can confirm that neither Teddy Sheringham or Kevin Watson will feature in tomorrow's Herts Senior Cup game at WGC.

"With a number of squad injuries and the FA Youth Cup game just 48 hours before this fixture, both were registered in case they were required. Tomorrow's #stevenagefc squad - as previously stated – will comprise a mixture of squad members and U18s."

Sheringham's last game came in 2008, when he played for Colchester United at the age of 42.
