Half-Time Report: Stevenage lead Crewe Alexandra through Francois Zoko

A fifth-minute strike from Francois Zoko gives Stevenage a 1-0 half-time lead over League One relegation rivals Crewe Alexandra in their basement battle at Broadhall Way.

Stevenage lead relegation rivals Crewe Alexandra 1-0 after 45 minutes of their League One match at Broadhall Way courtesy of an early goal from Francois Zoko.

The hosts are currently bottom of the table, but can move to within six points of Crewe, who are immediately above the bottom four, with victory this evening.

Zoko struck with just four minutes on the clock as the ball fell kindly for him to smash home from inside the penalty area, following good interplay between Michael Doughty and Luke Freeman.

The former Notts County striker could have returned the favour to Freeman shortly afterwards, but he could not find the full-back unmarked at the back post as Stevenage continued to press.

Bira Dembele, making his first appearance for the club, released Jimmy Smith with a smart chip over the top of the Crewe defence, but the midfielder fluffed his volley when through one on one.

Arsenal loanee Chuks Aneke had two headed chances to equalise for Alexandra, firstly glancing a Byron Moore delivery wide on 28 minutes and then later nodding onto the post from six yards out.
