Manchester City have earned a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Phil Foden put City into a fifth-minute lead, and the youngster's first top-flight goal proved to be enough for City to return to the top of the table.

Spurs played their part in another hard-fought contest at the Etihad Stadium, but the visitors were unable to make the most of a number of openings in the first half.

Find out how all of the action unfolded in the North-West courtesy of Sports Mole's minute-by-minute updates below.

Hello and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of the match in the Premier League between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. These two clubs played out a Champions League classic on Wednesday night, but will they be able to reach the heights of their respective performances this afternoon? It's time for the sides to make their way out onto the pitch at the Etihad Stadium, so let's see who features in each starting lineup...

MANCHESTER CITY XI: Ederson; Walker, Stones, Laporte, Zinchenko; De Bruyne, Gundogan, Foden; B.Silva, Aguero, Sterling

MANCHESTER CITY SUBSTITUTES: Muric, Otamendi, Fernandinho, D.Silva, Mahrez, Sane, Jesus

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR XI: Gazzaniga; Alderweireld, Sanchez, Vertonghen; Foyth, Dier, Alli, Davies; Eriksen, Son, Moura

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR SUBSTITUTES: Vorm, Walker-Peters, Rose, Wanyama, Skipp, Janssen, Llorente

KICKOFF:  City get us underway! We got four goals in the opening 11 minutes on Wednesday night. Same again today?

It looks like Spurs are starting out with a back five, with Foyth and Davies in the full-back positions. There is also a midfield three, with Moura and Son in attack.

SHOT!  Spurs get Son in a one-on-one battle with Stones, and the forward deceives the defender in order to tee up an opportunity for himself from an acute angle. Ederson makes the block at the near post, but that will be a concern for City.

GOAL!  MANCHESTER CITY 1-0 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (PHIL FODEN)

GOAL!  City take an early lead! Bernardo's floated cross towards the back post is ideal for Aguero to head across goal into the path of Foden, and the playmaker has the relatively simple task of heading into the corner from close range. It's the youngster's first Premier League goal.

The crowd absolutely loved that, and the decibel level at the Etihad Stadium has gone up several notches. This could turn into a difficult afternoon for the visitors.

What Spurs cannot afford to do is sit too deep. They have a lot of defensive-minded players on the pitch, but not many who can link the backline and attack.

There are also signs that Sterling has the better of Foyth, who is being used in an unfamiliar position. We may not get another seven goals this afternoon, but you get the feeling that there will be plenty of goalmouth action before the end of the contest.

City are now slowing things down a touch, but it is only highlighting that they are in full control of this match. Spurs are struggling to cope at the back.

CHANCE!  It is a different story when they go forward. Spurs put together a fine move which ends with Eriksen being played in behind Laporte, but the Dane fires his shot too close to Ederson from 14 yards out.

Spurs open up City yet again! Son is played through on goal but he takes far too much time to make a decision. It results in Laporte getting back to make the challenge.

City have reverted back to keeping hold of possession. They recognise that Spurs have the beating of them at the back. Son is causing the home side all sorts of problems.

PENALTY APPEAL!  City want a penalty when Bernardo Silva goes down under a challenge from Vertonghen, but the defender gets enough of the ball.

SHOT!  Foden looks like he is finding things so easy out there. The youngster turns a defender before getting a shot away from just inside the area, but it's straight at Gazzaniga.

Son comes too deep to collect a pass, and it results in the South Korea international gifting possession back to City. However, the home side cannot take advantage with a through-ball towards Foden going out of play.

It surely won't be long before we see a second goal. City are really pressing to double their advantage, with Bernardo Silva playing like a man possessed.

Spurs get themselves back on the ball - and Alli produces a fine bit of skill to nutmeg Bernardo - but the visitors eventually overplay things and City have a goal kick.

City are effectively playing on the counter now, but there is an argument that Guardiola's side may be more dangerous when breaking at pace.

Back come the home side, and each of Bernardo and Zinchenko have long-range strikes blocked. It will be interesting to see if the pace of this game drops ahead of half time. It's in the region of 28C pitchside.

CHANCE!  Spurs are dropping deeper, and it is only encouraging City. Bernardo cuts inside onto his left foot, and Gazzaniga needs to be alert to keep out the Portuguese's 12-yard shot.

This is a big blow for City. It looks like De Bruyne has sustained an injury to his lower left leg. It gave away when attempting a shot from distance.

SUBSTITUTION! De Bruyne hobbles off and Fernandinho is being introduced in his place.

Just the five minutes to go until half time now, and Spurs simply need to reach the break facing no more than a one-goal deficit. They are still showing ambition going forward, but Pochettino may be best instructing his side to play with more discipline.

SHOT!  Foden plays his part in another positive move from City, but it ends with Walker firing harmlessly over the crossbar from 20 yards out.

CHANCE!  Yet another opportunity for Spurs. A mix-up in the City defence leads to Son getting through on goal, but Ederson comes out well to block the forward's scuffed effort on the edge of the area.

There will be one minute of added-on time.

HALF TIME:  Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

The half-time whistle goes at the Etihad Stadium and City lead thanks to Foden's early header. However, it has not been purely positive news for the home side with De Bruyne limping off through injury. Spurs have also created a number of chances going forward and probably should be level.

It has been another entertaining 45 minutes between these sides, so why not take a look at our players stats by clicking here.

A quick reminder of both benches...

MANCHESTER CITY SUBSTITUTES: Muric, Otamendi, D.Silva, Mahrez, Sane, Jesus

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR SUBSTITUTES: Vorm, Walker-Peters, Rose, Wanyama, Skipp, Janssen, Llorente

KICKOFF:  Spurs get us back underway.

City started the second half on the back foot, but it has not taken the home side long to get back up the other end of the pitch. Spurs have been required to make a couple of timely blocks before getting the ball clear.

CHANCE!  City are making a big push for this second goal. Alderweireld makes a block to prevent Aguero from forcing Gazzaniga into a save from close range, before Foden miscued a shot well wide of the post from by the penalty spot.

Spurs are having to work overtime in order to remain in this match. Again, it only feels like a matter of time before City double their advantage, but I said that earlier...

Davies dispossesses Foden in the City half of the pitch, and it should lead to pressure from the visitors. However, the referee decides that it was a foul. The youngster was fortunate there.

City get another fortunate decision, this time when Foyth is adjudged to have fouled Sterling on the flank. Chance here.

Nothing comes from the set piece, but City remain in the ascendancy. Pochettino will surely be thinking about making his first change.

PENALTY APPEAL!  Spurs want handball against Walker, and they have a case. The distance between Alli and Walker has probably saved the right-back, but that is a penalty if VAR is involved.

SUBSTITUTION! Spurs make their first alteration with Wanyama replacing Dier.

The North London outfit are still offering very little going forward. Pochettino not only has Fernando Llorente at his disposal, but forgotten man Vincent Janssen too.

SUBSTITUTION! Interesting change from Guardiola. Sane is being introduced for Aguero.

There is an argument that De Bruyne's withdrawal has actually helped City. That extra defensive-minded player in midfield has closed off gaps for Spurs to exploit. There is still very little coming from the visitors.

SHOT!  Sane looks eager to impress, but he was never going to score with a low strike from 25 yards with his weaker right foot. The shot went wide of Ederson's right-hand post.

SUBSTITUTION! Spurs make a second change as Rose is introduced for Alli.

SAVE!  Gazzaniga keeps Spurs in this match. Sane does brilliantly down the left before providing Sterling with what should be an easy finish. However, the winger's first-time effort from six yards is somehow kept out by the leg of the goalkeeper.

CHANCE!  Spurs have had joy with getting in behind City this afternoon, and it happens again here. Moura is able to get a shot away when moving from goal, but Ederson is out quickly to deal with the effort.

Just the 15 minutes to go, and it is a surprise that Pochettino has not introduced either Llorente or Janssen. Moura and Son could benefit from having a target man to play off.

SUBSTITUTION! It is going to be Llorente with Alderweireld the man to be withdrawn.

SHOT!  Spurs are attempting to up the intensity, and you can sense some nerves in the City defence. Moura fired harmlessly over the crossbar when the ball fell invitingly to him on the edge of the area.

City are attempting to be subtle when it comes to wasting a bit of time, but Spurs are onto it. That said, the visitors are close to stepping over the mark when it comes to retrieving the ball. Tensions are rising...

The home side's supporters are attempting to encourage their players to keep fighting. They have had the better of the last couple of minutes, but Spurs are still a threat.

SUBSTITUTION! City make their final alteration with David Silva being brought on for Foden.

YELLOW CARD!  Wanyama goes into the book for tripping Fernandinho in the middle of the pitch.

Nothing is going for Spurs in the final third. City may have seen off the threat offered by the visitors.

SHOT!  Rose attempts to create something out of nothing, but the left-footer's 25-yard strike goes well wide of the far post.

There will be four minutes of added-on time.

YELLOW CARD!  Sterling has been involved in a couple of tussles over the last 10 minutes, and the winger is booked. Vertonghen also goes into the book for his part in the confrontation off the pitch.

Spurs are launching one last assault on the City goal, but the ball is still not falling for them. This match is as good as over.

FULL TIME:  Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur

The full-time whistle goes at the Etihad Stadium and City have held on to secure another vital three points in the race for the Premier League title. Foden's early header proved to be the difference, and City now move back above Liverpool at the top of the table. Spurs remain in third before the remainder of the weekend's fixtures.

That will be all from Sports Mole for this match. Thank you for joining us this afternoon, and we hope to see you again soon.
