Roberto Soldado's penalty beats Hull City

Soldado penalty enough for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Hull City in the Premier League with a late penalty from Roberto Soldado.

Spurs' first real chance of the afternoon came when Lewis Holtby's whipped cross found Paulinho, but the midfielder turned the ball over from eight yards.

The home side then broke and Andros Townsend fired in a shot from 25 yards, but Steve Harper was able to push the ball away.

It was then Hull's turn to test Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal. First, Yannick Sagbo fired in from a tight angle, and then George Boyd drilled a shot into the keeper's arms.

Former Spurs midfielder Tom Huddlestone then skimmed the crossbar with a volley. Sagbo also miscued his shot from Huddlestone's corner.

Kyle Walker tested Harper with a free kick, but again the keeper made a solid save.

Lloris then kept out Boyd late in the first half after Sandro had failed to clear the ball.

Soldado tried to slot the ball into the net after exchanging passes with Townsend, but Harper reacted to keep the shot out.

Aaron Lennon's pressure then provided an opportunity for Townsend, but the England winger was unable to find the target.

However, Spurs did make the breakthrough when Ahmed Elmohamady was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box and Soldado sent Harper the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Townsend then required treatment after he went over the advertising boards and landed in a photographers' dugout.

Huddlestone had one last chance for the Tigers but sliced his free kick wide.
