Tottenham Hotspur could be without up to eight players for Wednesday’s EFL Cup second-round clash with Charlton Athletic in North London.
Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odebert all remain long-term absences with knee injuries, while Mohammed Kudus is still recovering from a thigh problem and remains out.
Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro (both fitness) and Pape Sarr (thigh) all missed Spurs’ disappointing 3-0 Premier League defeat to Brentford last weekend and are currently doubts for Wednesday, with the trio unlikely to be risked against Charlton.
James Maddison landed awkwardly on his shoulder after coming on as a substitute against Brentford and has emerged as a doubt. A start is therefore considered unlikely for the playmaker.
Roberto De Zerbi will look to freshen up his starting lineup in a few positions, with goalkeeper Martin Dubravka pushing to make his debut at the expense of Antonin Kinsky while defenders Kevin Danso and Destiny Udogie aim to earn a recall.
After making a substitute appearance against Brentford, Mateus Fernandes could be handed his full debut in centre-midfield alongside Rodrigo Bentancur – another pushing to return to the first XI – while Lucas Bergvall may get the nod over both Sandro Tonali and Conor Gallagher.
With Spurs light in the winger department at present, Mickey Moore and Mathys Tel are likely to retain their stating spots, but Dominic Solanke could be tasked with leading the line at the expense of Richarlison.
Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup:
Dubravka; Gray, Van Hecke, Danso, Udogie; Fernandes, Bentancur, Bergvall; Moore, Solanke, Tel
