Live Commentary: Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Hull City (Spurs win 8-7 on penalties) - as it happened

Live text coverage of Tottenham Hotspur's clash with Hull City at White Hart Lane in the Capital One Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City met at White Hart Lane on Wednesday evening with a quarter-final spot in the Capital One Cup the prize in place for the winner.

Gylfi Sigurdsson opened the scoring with an emphatic long range effort before a Brad Friedel own goal gifted Hull an equaliser early in the second half.

The match went into extra time and it looked like Paul McShane's header had won the tie for Hull before Harry Kane forced a penalty shootout with his 108th minute strike.

Ahmed Elmohamady missed the vital penalty in sudden death as Spurs recorded an 8-7 win in the shootout to progress.

Read below to find out how the drama unfolded.

6.45pmGood evening everyone. These two sides only met a few days ago but Hull City already have the opportunity to avenge a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the league. The prize this time is a place in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals.

6.47pmChelsea, Stoke City, Leicester City, West Ham United and Manchester United all progressed last night but there's still three more places. Spurs start tonight's match as favourites but Hull will be desperate to continue their own cup run.

6.50pmIt's fair to say that Hull boss Steve Bruce wasn't very happy with the penalty decision that condemned his side to defeat on Sunday afternoon. They played very well on the weekend but they fell just short of a surprise result.

6.52pmAndre Villas-Boas also made headlines after that game when he suggested that the White Hart Lane crowd were not supportive enough. The reaction to those comments has certainly been mixed and it will be intriguing to see how the Spurs fans react tonight.

6.55pmBoth teams are expected to make a number of changes for tonight's contest as each manager looks to give some of his regulars in the league a much needed break. Full team news to follow.

6.57pmSPURS: Friedel, Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghten, Naughton, Paulinho, Lamela, Dembele, Sigurdsson, Eriksen, Defoe

SUBSTITUTIONS: Chiriches, Holtby, Capoue, Chadli, Lloris, Kane, Bentaleb

6.58pmHULL: Jakupovic, Rosenior, Bruce, Davies, Meyler, Graham, Koren, McShane, Boyd, Elmohamady, Quinn

SUBSTITUTES: Harper, Figueroa, Gedo, Sagbo, Mclean, Faye, Proschwitz

7.00pmAs expected, both managers make plenty of changes to their team. Eight players come in for Spurs, who welcome back Younes Kaboul in defence and Brad Friedel between the stick. Erik Lamela is also given a rare start as he continues to adjust to life in England. Roberto Soldado has been given the night off.

7.03pmHull are boosted by the return of Danny Graham in attack, while Robert Koren also returns from his own injury problems to provide creativity for the visitors. Yannick Sagbo, Steve Harper and Maynor Figueroa all drop to the bench.

7.05pmSpurs fans will also be happy to see Etienne Capoue return to the squad after recovering from an ankle injury he picked up in the North London derby in September.

7.08pmWill we finally see Erik Lamela at his best tonight? In fairness to the record signing, he hasn't been given too many chances to impress since his move from Roma but a big performance tonight could see him move up the pecking order. Villas-Boas has claimed that the Argentine forward is struggling with the English language, which is always a tough obstacle for foreign signings.

7.10pmHull have surprised many this season and as they currently sit 10th in the Premier League, maybe they'll fancy their chances to progress in this competition. Promoted teams often think of the cups as a burden but the fans always enjoy a good run.

7.13pmBruce set his team up very well on Sunday at White Hart Lane and a lot of people felt they were unlucky to lose to Soldado's penalty. They defended superbly but perhaps could have been more positive going forward. If they can keep the home crowd quiet once again, a surprise result could be on the cards.

7.16pmYou can also follow live text coverage of tonight's other Capital One Cup between Newcastle United and Manchester City.

7.18pmThe changes to both sides means that there are plenty of players who have the opportunity to impress their respective managers. It can often be viewed as an after though but the Capital One Cup does allow players to find form.

7.20pmHull have only ever won once at White Hart Lane. That famous triumph came back in 2008, when Geovanni secured the victory with a fine strike.

7.23pmSpurs have won this competition on four occasions, with their latest success also coming 2008. They beat Chelsea in the final five years ago, with Jonathan Woodgate scoring the winner in extra time.

7.25pmHull haven't progressed this far in the competition since the 1977-78 season and their cup run was ended by North London opponents on that night, with Liam Brady starring in a 5-1 win for Arsenal.

7.28pmTom Huddlestone appears to have been rested tonight, with no injury having been reported prior to the announcement of the teams. The midfielder was fantastic against his former club on Sunday and Hull could well miss his creativity this evening.

7.30pmPREDICTION: There's just 15 minute until kick off at White Hart Lane, so it's time to guess the score. I think there's a chance Hull might not be able to produce the same intensity that they did on Sunday and for that reason I'm going for a 3-0 Spurs victory.

7.33pmIt's probably a fair statement to say that both teams are more focused on the league this season but there's nothing like lifting a trophy in football. Can either of these teams be the one who triumphs in February?

7.35pmBoth sides are now heading back inside for the final team talks before the action begins. The first goal is always crucial in cup ties, who will make the better start?

7.39pmThe atmosphere is building at White Hart Lane now. Will the Spurs supporters impress Villas-Boas tonight?

7.42pmThe teams are heading out of the changing rooms now, with just the handshakes left before the game begins.

7.45pmHull will get the game underway.

1 minSpurs quickly win possession from the visitors and they've settled into a good passing rhythm. The home supporters are already making themselves heard.

2 minRoseniors takes a free kick short before getting the ball back and trying to attack down the left. Paulinho intervenes with a good tackle to end the move in its infancy.

4 minPromising start from Spurs. Eriksen links up with well with Defoe but the latter is denied a shooting opportunity by a crucial interception by Meyler.

5 minGraham hasn't been in great form for a while now and his lack of confidence shows when he misses a fairly simple chance. It doesn't matter too much though as the flag had been raised.

7 minSigurdsson is causing a few problems early on as he floats inside to collect the ball in space. He plays an inviting through ball towards Defoe, who is crowded out by a couple of Hull defenders.

9 minSpurs are in complete control at the moment, with much of the football being played just outside Hull's box. The visitors are struggling to retain possession when they do attempt to break.

10 minCHANCE! Kaboul comes close to opening the scoring when he head Eriksen's corner just wide of the post.

11 minKaboul delights the home supporters just moments after his miss as he tricks his way past Graham with a cheeky back heel inside his team's half of the pitch.

12 minSHOT! Lovely football from the hosts. A string of passes are put together before Paulinho collects the ball from Eriksen and fires wide from 25 yards.

13 minSpurs win another corner and Eriksen chooses to take it short to Lamela. The Dane quickly receives the ball back but his wild effort is no threat to the Hull goal.

15 minTottenham are playing some great passing football in the early stages and Hull have barely touched the ball in the last few minutes. Bruce will be getting increasingly concerned with how deep his team are dropping.

16 minStunning goal. Sigurdsson earns himself some space with a great turn before firing an unstoppable effort into the top corner from 25 yards out. It's an absolute wonder strike from the midfielder. Spurs deservedly lead.

18 minTottenham are continuing to grow in confidence. Hull quickly lose possession from the restart and they're chasing shadows at the moment.

19 minThe home side are agonisingly close to another opportunity when Eriksen's clever pass is just flicked away by Davies. Hull need to respond quickly and wrestle back some control.

21 minNaughton is seeing plenty of the ball on the left and he's linking well with Sigurdsson, who is proving to be a difficult player to track for Hull. No pressure at all on Kaboul or Vertonghen.

22 minEven Defoe is dropping into deeper positions to get involved in the neat passing game with his teammates. It's Paulinho who is pulling the strings at the moment. Hull's midfield are just far too deep.

24 minGraham does well break up an extended period of possession for the hosts but the forward is left frustrated when Meyler quickly gifts the ball back to Spurs.

25 minPaulinho attempts to break free of the Hull defenders but the Brazilian is punished for challenging McShane with a high foot.

27 minEriksen, Paulinho and Defoe are all involved in a beautiful passing move which almost creates an opening for the England forward, who just loses control of the ball at a vital moment.

28 minTottenham's desire to win the ball back when they do lose possession really is something to be admired. The work rate from every player is being applauded by the home supporters, who are enjoying what they are seeing.

30 minIt's attack vs. defence at White Hart Lane. Tottenham's creative players are linking together superbly and they seem to be breezing past Hull players in whichever way they choose. They'll want a second goal soon.

32 minAlex Bruce is forced off the field when he takes a knock on his shin. It doesn't look too serious and he'll return to the field in a few moments.

33 minHull finally manage to approach the box with the ball but Koren's drilled cross into the area is directed straight at Walker, who makes an easy clearance.

34 minSUBSTITUTION: Steve Bruce decides that his son isn't fit enough to continue and he sends on Nick Proschwitz as a replacement.

35 minSAVE! Much better from the visitors. Hull enjoy an extended spell of possession and Elmohamady tests Friedel with a powerful half volley. Graham looks set to convert the rebound but Kaboul makes a crucial tackle.

36 minCHANCE! Boyd's corner finds McShane, who fails to keep his header down at the back post. Good pressure from the visitors.

38 minHull's success in the last few minutes has come because they are pressing the ball further up the pitch. The difference is only 10 yards but it's making things much more difficult for Tottenham's midfielders.

40 minWalker is given a lecture by the referee following a wild challenge on Quinn after a Spurs attack breaks down. Bruce cannot believe that the England international hasn't been booked and he certainly has a point.

42 minHull's hopes of creating an opening are dashed when the assistant referee raises his flag just as Boyd was preparing to pull the trigger inside the box.

43 minLooking at that challenge again Walker can definitely consider himself lucky. It should have definitely been at least a yellow card and some referees may have even shown a red.

44 minNaughton fails to intercept a cross-field pass and the ball reaches Elmohamady, whose cross is then cleared by Vertonghen. Hull have improved as the half has progressed.

45 minThere will be just one minute of added time played.

8.33pmThere's no drama at the end of the first half as Spurs ensure that they go in ahead. We haven't seen a lot of goalscoring opportunities but Sigurdsson's stunning effort has certainly given the fans something to talk about.

8.35pmWe've seen plenty of great strikes already this season and Sigurdsson's goal is certainly up there with the best of them. It's a piece of brilliance good enough to win any match.

8.38pmVillas-Boas will definitely be sitting a bit more comfortably if his side can find a second goal early in the second half. Spurs have certainly been the better side but Hull were starting to find their feet towards the end of the first period.

8.40pmBruce's team are in this game as long as it remains 1-0 but they need to give Graham more support in attack. The visitors have only really threatened the goal once.

8.43pmIt's goalless in tonight's other Capital One Cup game. You can read half-time reports of both matches here:

Newcastle 0-0 Man City
Spurs 1-0 Hull

8.45pmHull need to come out and play with a high tempo after the break. If they can rattle Spurs in the early stages of the second half it will throw the hosts off their passing rhythm.

8.47pmBoth have returned to the pitch following the break. Spurs will get the game back underway.

46 minSUBSTITUTION: Bruce has made a second change at the start of the second half, with Graham being replaced by Aaron McLean.

46 minCHANCE! McLean has a great opportunity to make an immediate impact when he steals the ball from Dembele but the forward drags his shot wide from the edge of the box.

48 minSpurs have once again started to dominate possession following that early scare. Lamela is eager to get on the ball early in the second half as he looks to impress the home supporters.

49 minVertonghen, calm as ever, steps in at a vital moment to prevent an attack from Hull building momentum on the edge of the box.

51 minThere's a scary moment for Hull fans when Jakupovic is forced to control a difficult pass from Quinn. Luckily for the visitors, the goalkeeper shows a good touch before clearing the danger.

52 minSHOT! Walker's cross from the right is too strong for his teammates in the box. Spurs do manage to retain possession and the ball falls to Defoe, who curls a shot well wide from outside the box. It's been a quiet night for the striker so far.

53 minHull level the scores! The visitors keep the pressure on following a corner and it's Boyd's piece of skill which picks out Elmohamady, who drills in a good cross. Davies fails to tap the ball in from close range but his poor effort is fumbled in by Friedel. Not a great moment for the goalkeeper.

55 minSpurs have been shocked by the equaliser. Hull are the team controlling possession and Villas-Boas will be sweating on the sidelines.

56 minCHANCE! Davies can't reach the first cross into the box but another delivery from the wing finds McLean, who heads just wide.

58 minI mentioned what Hull needed to do after the break and they've definitely rattled the hosts. Spurs are losing the ball far too often in midfield and Walker is forced to make a vital interception to prevent Boyd from unleashing a shot at goal.

60 minLamela breezes past a couple of Hull players with ease to create an opening. It's a good move from the hosts but Paulinho's wild cross disappoints the home supporters.

61 minThere's a break in play as McLean receives treatment following a tough challenge from Paulinho, who was lucky not to be punished by the referee.

63 minExcellent from Lamela as he offloads the ball to Paulinho before trying to catch the pass that follows from Eriksen. The Argentine forward can't beat Jakupovic to the ball inside the box.

64 minSpurs have definitely altered their approach since Hull drew level. The hosts are playing a few more direct passes but they're struggling to pick out Defoe, who hasn't been involved enough.

66 minSigurdsson is unhappy with the referee after the midfielder appears to be bundled over off the ball, which prevents him from collecting a pass from Defoe. No reaction from the officials though.

67 minNaughton requires treatment when he goes down complaining about a knee problem. It looks like Spurs will be forced to make a change in a few moments.

68 minSUBSTITUTION: Two changes for Spurs as Vlad Chiriches replaces the injured Naughton, a move which will see Vertonghen go to left back. Nacer Chadli is also on for Eriksen.

69 minThe ball won't sit down for either Defoe or Paulinho following another clever passing move and Hull take the opportunity to clear the danger.

70 minExcellent defending from McShane as he does just enough to prevent Chadli from making meaningful contact with the ball inside the box when Vertonghen whips in an inviting cross.

72 minIt's just not been Defoe's night. Walker sprints out of defence before cutting inside and picking out the striker, who fails to control the ball at the first time of asking. Davies steps in to end what looked like a promising move.

73 minKoren takes a corner short before delivering a great cross which Chiriches does well to clear under pressure from Davies. We will see 30 minutes of extra time if this game remains level.

75 minYELLOW CARD! Defoe's night goes from bad to worse as he receives a booking for simulation. That's not a good decision from the referee. Davies clearly made contact with the forward.

77 minSUBSTITUTION: Defoe gets the decision this time when Meyler bundles the forward over 30 yards from goal. There's a disappointing moment for Chadli, who is forced off just minutes after coming on. I'm not sure what the exact problem is though. Harry Kane is his replacement.

78 minSAVE! Jakupovic is called into action to deny Lamela, who had set his sights on the top corner from the free kick. Decent save.

80 minSpurs are asking most of the questions now as they enjoy a sustained spell of possession. Kane's first action is to win a corner for his side.

81 minHull manage to clear the corner before McShane frustrates his teammates with a slightly nervous clearance under no pressure at all in the box. Koren is then removed, with Gedo being his replacement.

82 minThere's a few cheers in the crowd when Kane slots the ball into the bottom corner but the referee had already blown the whistle following a hand ball from Defoe.

84 minChiriches doesn't cover himself in glory when he struggles to clear the ball under pressure from Gedo. Frustrating times for the home supporters.

85 minIt's Hull's turn to apply the pressure now as Dembele and Kaboul are both forced to make a couple of vital clearances inside their own box. Will there be a late winner?

87 minBruce is absolutely furious with Jakupovic, who takes an age to deliver a long ball towards the Hull attackers. I hope he doesn't think there will be a replay.

88 minThe volume is increased inside the ground when Kane goes past a couple of defenders before being stopped at the final hurdle by Davies.

90 minVertonghen's long throw causes a few problems and Spurs win a corner. Four minutes of stoppage time to be played.

90+1 minJakupovic does well to confidently come out of his goal and claim Sigurdsson's corner.

90+2 minThere's a lot of confusion at the back from Spurs in stoppage but Porschwitz can't take advantage and the hosts eventually manage to clear the danger.

90+3 minSpurs once again frustrate their supporters by taking chances at the back but Boyd is off side, so Hull cannot create an opening.

90+4 minWOODWORK! Inches away from a winner for Spurs. Kane receives the ball on the edge of the box but his powerful effort strikes the outside of the post.

9.39pmWe're going to see 30 minutes of extra time at White Hart Lane. Hull deserve a lot of credit for the way that they have fought back since falling behind.

9.40pmFriedel will be kicking himself for that error but he could have the last word if this match goes to penalties. Will anyone find a winner in extra time?

9.42pmHull will get the action underway in the first period of extra time.

91 minThe visitors start extra time on the front foot but Spurs then break well in numbers. Defoe collects the ball in space but an off side flag ends his hopes of firing his team ahead.

93 minLamela fancies his chances of scoring a wonder goal of his own as he sprints past a number of defenders before losing control of the ball inside the box.

95 minSpurs have once again settled into a good passing rhythm but we've seen that before already tonight. The hosts need to increase the tempo when they commit men forward.

96 minCLOSE! Sigurdsson targets the bottom corner when he's gifted some space on the edge of the box but he fires a shot just wide of the post.

97 minLamela's slip can't come at a worse time as Defoe threatens to break free of the defence when Spurs break quickly from a corner.

99 minHull piles on the pressure with a couple of corners and they get their reward. Boyd's delivery is perfect and McShane's header is far too powerful for Friedel to keep out. Hull have one foot in the quarter-finals. Do Spurs have a response?

101 minSpurs are quickly back on the front foot but they desperately need to create a good chance. Meyler fouls Sigurdsson and the hosts have a free kick 30 yards from goal.

102 minTottenham keep the pressure on, despite seeing the first free kick cleared. Vertonghen is pushing up from left back but Hull's defence are applying themselves brilliantly.

104 minSpurs are becoming more and more frustrated as every delivery into the box is cleared by a Hull player. It's backs against the wall for the visitors but they're coping well.

105+1 minHull are already looking for the corner in added time in the first extra period. Not too much longer left to hold on for the visitors.

9.59pmAfter 105 minutes of football, Hull lead Spurs at White Hart Lane. Bruce's side need to stay ahead for 15 more minutes to book their spot in the quarter-finals of this competition.

10.00pmThe break doesn't last for long and Spurs are ready to get back underway.

106 minCHANCE! Sigurdsson whips in a good cross from the right but Kaboul can't hit the target with his header.

107 minCHANCE! Gedo should secure Hull's progress but he somehow manages to blast his shot over the crossbar from 12 yards out. Will they regret that miss?

108 minGOAL! SPURS 2-2 HULL (KANE)

108 minKane makes sure that Gedo regrets that miss as he levels the scores again. The striker collects a pass on the edge of the box and holds off a couple of challenges before firing into the bottom corner. Will there be a winner?

110 minThe momentum is with Spurs now as they go in search of a winning goal late on in this thrilling cup tie. Great drama at White Hart Lane. Defoe receives the ball in the box but he drills a shot over the bar.

112 minThe Hull players are able to take a quick break when Dembele brings down Proschwitz in midfield. A long ball into the box is then well claimed by Friedel

113 minDefoe shows some neat footwork on the edge of the box to earn himself some room but he drags a shot harmlessly wide of the target.

114 minKaboul pops up on the right wing to launch another Spurs attack but his cross is easily collected by Jakupovic. Is this match destined for penalties?

115 minDefoe exchanges passes with Lamela and McShane does well to block the forward's shot at goal. Hull then clear the corner which follows but the pressure is still being piled on.

116 minPoor decision making from Walker, who chooses to fire a wild shot over the crossbar rather then deliver a cross into a congested penalty area.

118 minSpurs are finding it difficult to break down a determined Hull defence as the visitors look to hold on for a penalty shootout. Just a couple of minutes left in extra time.

119 minHull drop deeper and deeper, which invites even more pressure from the hosts. Dembele looks desperately for a way through on the edge of the box before finding Paulinho, who fires a shot over the crossbar.

120 minThe fourth official indicates that there will be just one minute added on.

120+1 minCLOSE! Sigurdsson squanders the final opportunity of the match when he drills an effort wide following a clever pass from Kane.

10.17pmNeither team have been able to find a winning goal in extra time and this match is now heading to penalties.

10.18pmThere will be only a few moments to prepare for the shootout. It's been a dramatic evening but the excitement hasn't finished just yet.

10.20pmThe home crowd are urging on their side prior to the shootout. It's time for the drama to begin. Sigurdsson will take the first penalty.

SPURS 1-0 HULLSigurdsson drills the first penalty into the bottom corner. McLean up first for Hull.

SPURS 1-0 HULLFriedel saves! Poor penalty from the forward and the American makes the block.

SPURS 2-0 HULLNo mistake from Defoe, who fires a superb penalty into the corner.

SPURS 2-1 HULLEmphatic response from Quinn as he hammers his effort home from 12 yards.

SPURS 3-1 HULLVertonghen sends Jakupovic the wrong way as he tucks his penalty in off the post.

SPURS 3-2 HULLConfident penalty from Boyd as he drills the ball into the bottom corner.

SPURS 3-2 HULLLamela misses! His confidence won't be improved as Jakupovic makes a routine save.

SPURS 3-3 HULLFriedel guesses correctly but Gedo finds the corner to pull his side level.

SPURS 4-3 HULLKane punches the air after smashing his penalty into the roof of the net. Hull must score their next penalty.

SPURS 4-4 HULLProschwitz sends us into sudden death with a fine penalty down the middle.

SPURS 5-4 HULLPaulinho puts the pressure back on Hull by slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

SPURS 5-5 HULLFriedel is inches away from stopping Meyler's penalty but the ball creeps in.

SPURS 6-5 HULLKaboul confidently fires the ball down the middle to nudge his side ahead again.

SPURS 6-6 HULLRosenior just manages to beat Friedel, who once again comes close to getting a hand on the ball.

SPURS 7-6 HULLDembele clips his penalty in after sending Jakupovic the wrong way.

SPURS 7-7 HULLMcShane lives dangerously by converting his penalty off the underside of the crossbar.

SPURS 8-7 HULLWalker drills his penalty into the bottom corner. Fine strike from 12 yards.

SPURS 8-7 HULLSPURS WIN 8-7 ON PENALTIES! Elmohamady doesn't make great contact with his penalty and Friedel blocks the ball to his right.

10.31pmWhat a night of drama at White Hart Lane. Hull pushed the hosts all the way but Spurs have managed to book their spot in the quarter-finals following a dramatic penalty shootout.

10.33pmElmohamady is once again the unluckiest man at White Hart Lane. He gave away a penalty in the league defeat on Sunday and he's missed an effort of his own from 12 yards to send his side crashing out of the competition.

10.35pmIt was a brave effort from Steve Bruce's side but they've fallen at the final hurdle this evening. Spurs will now face West Ham United in the final eight of the Capital One Cup.

10.37pmThanks for joining me this evening and I hope you've enjoyed the coverage on a thrilling evening in the Capital One Cup. Goodnight.
