Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has backed Jermain Defoe to break the club's all-time European goalscoring record.

The 31-year-old equalled Martin Chivers's tally of 22 with his side's second in their 2-0 win against Sheriff Tiraspol.

The Portuguese boss was full of praise for his striker after the match.

"It is some achievement," Villas-Boas told reporters. "If we continue like this, there is a big chance he will break the record.

"It will be another great achievement for him. I am sure he will achieve it.

"Let's not celebrate before it happens, but it will be a great record for him and the club. It was another great performance by Jermain."

Spurs' next game is against Hull City on Sunday.

Spurs' Jermain Defoe is congratulated by team mate Lewis Holtby after scoring then opening goal against Dinamo Tbilisi during their Europa League play-off match on August 29, 2013
