Tottenham Hotspur have been eliminated from the Europa League at the last-16 stage after falling to a 2-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga outfit already led 3-0 from the first leg before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted two more goals to put the tie out of Spurs' reach.

Son Heung-Min netted a consolation goal during the closing stages but the Premier League club were well beaten.

Hello, and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of the Europa League clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund.

When Spurs were drawn to play Dortmund, Mauricio Pochettino would have been aware that his main aim was to keep his side in within a realistic chance of progression for the second leg, but unfortunately for the Argentine, all did not go to plan in Germany. Nevertheless, while a three-goal turnaround is unlikely, Pochettino will be keen for his side to show their true ability against a side that they could very well come up against in the Champions League next season.

A one-goal victory for Spurs would be an achievement if Dortmund's recent form is anything to go by. Thomas Tuchel's have not lost in 2016 - a run stretching 13 games in all competitions. Dortmund have also conceded just the one goal in nine matches. Over to you, Spurs...

Anyhow, let's take a look at the two starting lineups. You may be surprised with the team that Pochettino has selected...

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR XI: Lloris, Trippier, Alderweireld, Wimmer, Davies; Dier, Mason; Chadli, Alli, Lamela; Son

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR SUBSTITUTES: Vorm, Carter-Vickers, Rose, Carroll, Onomah, Winks, Kane

BORUSSIA DORTMUND XI: Weidenfeller, Piszczek, Sokratis, Subotic, Ginter, Weigl, Reus, Castro, Schmelzer, Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan

BORUSSIA DORTMUND SUBSTITUTES: Hummels, Durm, Pulisic, Sahin, Bürki, Ramos, Kagawa

Spurs fans - what do you make of that? It doesn't come as a surprise to see Harry Kane start on the substitutes' bench, but aside from that, Pochettino has named a strong lineup. Eric Dier and Dele Alli have taken their place in the side after missing out last week, while it appears that Nacer Chadli has reverted to a wide position, rather than a lone attacking role.

As for Dortmund, Tuchel has gone with pretty much the same side that were so impressive seven days ago. The temptation would have been there to rotate a few of his first-choice players, but he has shown his intent to get the tie wrapped up as soon as possible.

There are already three games underway this evening, and we have full coverage of one of them! Valencia are currently 2-1 up on aggregate against Athletic Bilbao with around 30 minutes of the second leg remaining. Want to keep up-to-date with the closing stages? Of course you do - click here.

Our coverage for the all-English clash between Manchester United and Liverpool is also well underway too. Click here if you want to catch up with our build-up to that match.

The Spurs Twitter account are currently highlighting the fact that Erik Lamela will be making his 100th appearance for the North London outfit this evening. He's has probably got some way to go to justifying the £25.7m fee that Spurs paid Roma for his signature, but he is far the laughing stock that he was once made out to be after his first few games. As many as 15 goals have been netted in all competitions, including nine in the Europa League. He loves a Thursday night at White Hart Lane so don't be surprised if he makes it 10 tonight...

We mentioned earlier that Dortmund had gone 13 games without suffering defeat, but what about Spurs? Over that same 13-match period, they have won eight and lost three. That's a very respectable record for a team who had been competing in three competitions and were rotating players on a game-by-game basis.

UPDATE! Bilbao have got the crucial away goal against Valencia! Gary Neville will not be pleased. Catch the final stages of that game here.

I'm going to ramble on for another 25 minutes but don't let me distract you from taking a look at our preview for this match. You'll also notice that there have been some very biased Spurs supporters if you vote in the poll at the bottom of the page.

Interestingly, Spurs have an excellent record against German teams at White Hart Lane. In seven matches, they have won six and drew the other. It doesn't necessarily have any relevance to tonight's match, but that's our best effort to give Spurs fans reason for optimism.

We all know the state of play in the Premier League table because frankly, no-one can stop talking about Leicester City being top of the pile, but what about the current situation in the Bundesliga? At one stage, it appeared that Bayern Munich could run away with it but Dortmund have done well to get back to within five points of their rivals. That's partly down to Dortmund winning 10 of their last 13 league outings - you can take a look at their results this season by clicking here.

RESULT! Valencia are out! Disaster for Gary Neville's men, who have succumbed to the away-goals rule against Athletic Bilbao. Read our on-the-whistle report here.

Villarreal and Sparta Prague have also progressed through to the quarter-finals after getting past Bayer Leverkusen and Lazio respectively. I'm sure everyone will be looking to meet the Czech side in the last eight!

PREDICTION! Spurs may possess a fine record against German teams at White Hart Lane but we cannot look past Dortmund in this one. At some point in the game, Spurs are going to have to force the issue and that will likely let in Dortmund on the break. 2-1 to the German giants.

The two teams are making their way out onto the pitch in North London. We will be underway very shortly!

Dortmund get us started! You feel that they need a fast start here.

So much for a fast start. Aubameyang gets hold of the ball for Dortmund and drives at the defence before trying to find a teammate at the back post. However, Lloris is out well to claim the ball.

Dortmund are having a lot of possession during these early stages but they are yet to get a shot on Lloris's goal. Spurs simply cannot afford to concede here or it is effectively game over.

We are going to have a lengthy break in play here after a nasty collision between Lloris and Davies. The goalkeeper came out to claim but as he caught the ball, he ran into his teammate. It looks a bad one and I wouldn't be surprised if Davies came off here.

It looked as if Davies was going to continue, but after giving it a go, he is on the ground. It looks like a concussion.

SUBSTITUTION! The natural replacement is Danny Rose, and he makes his way onto the pitch.

Spurs are finding it extremely difficult when they aren't in possession. They are doing a lot of chasing and you would have thought that will hinder them as the game goes on. They are also down to two substitutions. We are still awaiting their first shot on goal.

Dier is furious after giving a foul away in a threatening position and he is right to be after appearing to make contact with the ball. Lamela is having to move him away from the referee. Spurs get away with it though. It's a shocking delivery from Reus.

Spurs finally show some attacking intent through Rose, who weaves his way into a crossing position, but a Dortmund defender gets ahead of Son before he can make contact with the ball. Best bit of play so far for the Premier League side.

CHANCE! It was only a half-chance at most, but it's a chance nonetheless. A corner from Lamela was delivered in from the right but Dier's glancing header went into the side-netting. Dortmund had a man on the post anyway.

GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Borussia Dortmund (Aubameyang)

Simply put, that is game over. Let's all shake hands and agree that Dortmund are going through. Aubameyang picked up the ball around 30 yards from goal and after taking a stride forward, struck a swerving shot into the far corner. It's a phenomenal effort.

BOOKING! To compound Spurs' misery, Lamela has gone into the book.

You probably know this already, but Spurs need five in about 60 minutes. It's not going to happen.

As you can imagine, the atmosphere at White Hart Lane has quietened down a touch. All you can hear is chanting and the pounding of a drum in the Dortmund section. It's party time for them for the remainder of this match. Spurs have yet to provide a response since the goal.

UPDATE! United have taken the lead against Liverpool at Old Trafford! The Merseyside giants still lead 2-1 on aggregate but it's very much game on now. You can keep up-to-date with that one by clicking here.

CHANCE! Almost an opening for Spurs. A set piece from Lamela causes confusion at the back post but Subotic is there to clear the danger just before Alderweireld is able to make contact with the ball.

Spurs have just tried a long, hopeful ball to Son. Well that's not going to work, is it? Lamela picks up the second ball but he is soon crowded out by two Dortmund defenders. Five minutes to go until the break. Spurs need it.

CHANCE! That's how you get the best out of Son. Lamela slips a neat ball through to the South Korean international but from around 20 yards out, he drags a shot well wide of the target. That was the opening.

There will be three minutes of added-on time.

HALF TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Borussia Dortmund

The half-time whistle goes at White Hart Lane and it remains 1-0 to Dortmund, who have one foot and four toes in the quarter-finals. Spurs need more than a miracle to remain in the competition but we will be back for the second 45 minutes in a few moments or so.

Spurs get us back underway.

I don't think we should set our expectations too high for this second half. You'd have to think both teams will want to conserve energy ahead of the weekend.

UPDATE! We should have added that Liverpool found an equaliser just before half time. It leaves Manchester United needing a minimum of three goals during the second half. You can follow the second 45 minutes of that one by clicking here.

Not a lot to report here. Both teams attempt through-balls but neither come off. There's not really much urgency from either side but what do you expect. I don't think we will be seeing Harry Kane this evening.

CHANCE! Aubameyang has been one of the best players in Europe this season but he has just made a complete hash of a chance inside the penalty area. He accelerated away from Tripper to create the opening but instead of finding the bottom corner, he sliced his shot high into the stands.

SUBSTITUTION! Dortmund are controlling the tie to such an extent that they can afford to bring on a 17-year-old American youth international for Reus. Christian Pulisic is the man to come on.

BOOKING! Talk about a needless booking. Gonzalo Castro is cautioned for a late challenge on Lamela. In all fairness, it probably didn't warrant a yellow card.

SUBSTITUTIONS! The most exciting news I can bring you is news of substitutions. Sorry! Tom Carroll has replaced Alli for Spurs and Shinji Kagawa is about to come on for Dortmund.

GOAL! Tottenham Hotspur 0-2 Borussia Dortmund (Aubameyang)

Aubameyang has his of the night and it's just like a goal you would score if you were playing on novice mode on FIFA 16. Mkhitaryan has all the time in the world to play in his teammate, who fires the ball past Lloris from 10 yards.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Borussia Dortmund (Son)

The miracle is on! No, sorry, it's really not. Spurs get a goal back though through Son, who latches onto a poor back-pass from Subotic who round the goalkeeper and tap into an empty net.

Spurs can at least say that they have got a consolation goal from what has been a one-sided tie. They are going to have to improve against this calibre of team next season.

I'm starting to consider lobbying for a rule where the two managers can agree on an early finish if there is no chance of one team gaining progress through to the next round. What do you think? This is pointless now. We are all just waiting for the full-time whistle.

SHOT! Ryan Mason tries a shot from the edge of the penalty area but it is way off target. Still, it's a shot. Spurs haven't had many of those tonight.

There will be two minutes of added-on time.

FULL TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Borussia Dortmund

The full-time whistle goes at White Hart Lane and Dortmund have completed a 5-1 aggregate win over Spurs to reach the quarter-finals of the competition. They join Liverpool in the last eight after they progressed past Manchester United. That will be all from Sports Mole for this evening, but we hope that you can stick around for all of the results and reaction. Goodbye for now.
