Mauricio Pochettino: 'Tottenham Hotspur deserved to be knocked out of Champions League'

Mauricio Pochettino believes that Tottenham Hotspur did not deserve to reach the Champions League knockout stages.

Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur did not deserve to go through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The North London side were eliminated from the competition after falling to a 2-1 loss at AS Monaco on Tuesday, one of three defeats for Spurs in Group E this season.

Pochettino told BT Sport: "We are out and we have time to assess and analyse. It is true we feel disappointed but today we missed opportunities.

"I think we made too many mistakes at home at Wembley. We don't deserve to go through to the next round because we didn't show enough quality.

"We will take many things from this defeat, you learn and improve every day. Now we are trying to reduce the gap on the teams above us in the Premier League."

The result at the Stade Louis II means that Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen qualify for the last 16, while Spurs will play CSKA Moscow in a fortnight's time for third place in the group.
