Alderweireld urges Spurs to "stick together" during low spell

Toby Alderweireld has encouraged his Tottenham Hotspur players to "stick together" following the club's 7-2 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Spurs were left in a state of shock after former Arsenal player Serge Gnabry scored four second-half goals to condemn the North London side to a gargantuan defeat.

The result comes a week after Mauricio Pochettino's men suffered a shock EFL Cup exit following a penalty-shootout defeat against Colchester United.

Speaking to The Mirror soon after the game, Alderweireld said: "I'm in my fifth year at the club. It's not only going up, you know, that's the way football works. Even if you don't like it, it's just the way it works.

"You see every big club you see that sometimes the purity of not playing the best football they're not in a good moment and you have to try to change this. It's not easy but we have to try.

"We have to stick together now in this, it's not someone to blame or is to blame. Everybody makes mistakes today with all the mistakes, but you have to pick ourselves up and try to be to come out to this as a team."

Spurs players are said to have held an inquest of their own in the dressing room after the defeat to Bayern, with Pochettino giving his team the silent treatment as he often does after bad results.

The Argentine, who signed a new five-year contract with Spurs in May, reportedly continues to have the complete backing of the club's board despite the poor start to the season.
