Chelsea striker Diego Costa withdraws from Spain squad due to injury

Injury forces Costa out of Spain duty

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has withdrawn from the Spain squad due to injury.

The 28-year-old was a fitness doubt heading into the international break after suffering a groin injury during the Blues' 5-0 win over Everton last weekend.

After undergoing medical tests with the national team doctors, Costa was ruled out of Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Macedonia, as well as next Tuesday's friendly with England.

The news was announced via the Spanish side's official Twitter page, which also revealed that Iago Aspas has been called into Julen Lopetegui's squad as a replacement.

The injury blow to Costa raises questions over his availability for Chelsea's matches after the international break, which includes Premier League games against Middlesbrough, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.
