James Ward-Prowse dreaming of becoming England captain

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse believes that he can prove his leadership ability to one day put on the captain's armband for the England senior side.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has admitted that he dreams of captaining England later in his career.

Ward-Prowse captained the Under-21 side to a 3-2 victory over Germany earlier this week by scoring a late winner at the Riverside Stadium, and he is hopeful of gaining more experience as a leader as his development for club and country continues.

"I feel like I'd be able to do it," the 20-year-old told reporters. "All of my role models - [Steven] Gerrard, [Frank] Lampard and [David] Beckham - were leaders and that's the sort of person I like to think I am, an inspiration to others.

"I am still learning all the time about being a leader.

"You must lead with your actions, be the best you can and work hard. If you can do that you obviously set a great example for the rest of the lads to follow."

Ward-Prowse has played 15 times for England Under-21s, scoring four goals.
