Gardner to undergo Achilles surgery

Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones has revealed that defender Anthony Gardner needs surgery on an Achilles injury.

Gardner was withdrawn during the opening 45 minutes of Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough last weekend, and Jones has admitted that it is a big blow to the club.

The 57-year-old told the club's official website: "Anthony will see a specialist in London and have an operation.

"It's a blow to the boy and the team because he was playing very well and had a good start to the season."

The 32-year-old has made 40 appearances for the Owls since moving to the club last year.
