Belgium beat Scotland to remain top of group

Belgium strengthen their position as Group A leaders in World Cup qualifying by beating Scotland 2-0 at Hampden Park.

Belgium strengthened their position as Group A leaders in World Cup qualifying by beating Scotland 2-0 at Hampden Park on Friday evening.

The result, coupled with Croatia's 1-1 draw in Serbia, leaves Marc Wilmots's men five points clear at the top of the table.

The visitors controlled the game from start to finish in Glasgow, dominating possession and looking rock solid in defence.

Steven Defour fired his side ahead on 38 minutes, before substitute Kevin Mirallas sealed the win late in the second half.

Defour's opener, which was his second senior international goal on his 40th appearance, occurred when his right boot connected sweetly with Kevin De Bruyne's low cross.

Mirallas's goal was the product of Christian Benteke's through pass and a composed one-on-one finish by the Everton frontman.

The Belgians could have easily won by a bigger margin had it not been for an inspired performance from goalkeeper David Marshall, who made good stops to deny Axel Witsel, Nacer Chadli and De Bruyne.
