SPFL secretary: 'Scotland considering winter break'

SPFL secretary Iain Blair says that they are considering reinstating a winter break in the Scottish football season.

SPFL secretary Iain Blair has said that they are considering introducing a winter break to the Scottish football season.

The break could be introduced for the 2016-17 season, with suggestions that it will take place over two or three weeks in January.

"We're looking at the fixture issues to try and find ways in which we can make the best use of dates that are available," SPFL secretary Iain Blair told The Scotsman.

"We cannot lose sight of the key European dates and international dates we have to avoid, so that may lead us towards playing more games in the early summer than late summer, whether that's the League Cup in July or starting the League in July, and in order to ensure there is a decent break then we have to look at the possibility of a winter break."

The Scottish Premiership previously had a winter break from the 1998-99 to the 2000-01 seasons.
