San Jose Earthquakes shatter DC United in capital

Earthquakes shatter United in capital

DC United have slumped to back-to-back defeats after losing 2-0 to San Jose Earthquakes.

Having lost 3-1 to New York City FC last time out, coach Ben Olsen would have eyed a swift response at the RFK Stadium but the clash got off to a rotten start for the hosts.

With just four minutes on the clock, Chris Wondolowski opened the scoring for San Jose with a right-footed effort inside the box to compound United's woes.

DC responded well, with Kofi Opare going close with a header, before Alvaro Saborio somehow fired over from inside the six-yard box on 20 minutes as the visitors escaped.

The hosts continued to laid siege to the Earthquakes goal but they did not do enough before the break to restore parity.

Their task increased in size on 52 minute when Shea Salinas, against the run of play, bent his effort around Andrew Dykstra.

To contextualise United's woes on the night, the hosts had 23 efforts at goal but only four on target as San Jose left the capital with all three points.
