MK Dons walk past Rotherham United to claim opening-day win

MK Dons ease to an opening-day win against Rotherham United thanks to three first-half goals.

MK Dons have won their first game in the Championship with a thumping 4-1 win away at Rotherham United.

The Dons made a dream start as they took the lead in the fifth minute when Rob Hall converted a Dean Bowditch cross at the back post from close range.

However, Rotherham equalised less than 10 minutes later as Chris Maguire's cross was headed in by Matt Derbyshire.

Rotherham were dangerous going forward as Derbyshire was put through on goal, but his shot was deflected onto the crossbar.

Seconds later, the striker was left all alone in the box, but he was denied by David Martin once again, before Aiden White found him at the back post but his header went over.

The hosts may have been on top, but they fell behind a few minutes later as new centre-back Danny Collins diverted a cross past his own keeper and into the net.

Things got better minutes later as Ben Reeves found Bowditch, and he smashed the ball through the keeper to open up a two-goal lead.

New striker Sam Gallagher almost helped himself to a fourth for the visitors when he went close with a low shot, as the game edged towards half time.

Rotherham tried to push forward in the early stages of the second half but MK Dons resiliently held firm defensively.

New defender Tom Thorpe headed straight at Martin from close range following a long throw, but chances remained few and far between.

At the other end, the Dons wrapped the points up as substitute Carl Baker smashed a shot into the top corner after an individual run.
