Half-Time Report: James Vaughan scores on Huddersfield Town return

Vaughan scores on Terriers return

James Vaughan has scored on his return from injury to give Huddersfield Town a half-time lead away to Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United at the New York Stadium.

Steve Evans's men, who earned a crucial victory over fellow strugglers Wigan Athletic last weekend, made a bright start and had the first meaningful attempt at goal as Emmanuel Ledesma tried his luck from distance, but failed to trouble keeper Alex Smithies.

However, the visitors perhaps should have gone ahead on 13 minutes when Grant Holt found himself one on one with Adam Collin, but the veteran attacker was unable to find the back of the net.

Moments later, the Terriers were presented with another chance as Harry Bunn's cross found Vaughan and the ex-Everton forward, back after a three-month absence, was denied by a fine save from Collin.

Bunn again threatened down the flank on 18 minutes, but his cross for Holt was overhit as Huddersfield failed to make the most of their early opportunities.

On the half-hour mark, the hosts came close to taking the lead after Tom Lawrence's well-taken free kick needed to be stopped low down by Smithies.

However, Vaughan popped up 10 minutes before the interval to tap in following Sean Scannell's low cross, giving the Terriers a priceless lead in their quest to avoid the drop from the Championship.
