Ireland secure a play-off spot after defeating Armenia to take second spot in Group B.

The Republic of Ireland have secured second place in Group B after a narrow 2-1 win against Armenia at the Aviva Stadium.

Giovanni Trapattoni's side needed only a point but took all three after an action-packed encounter.

The visitors were reduced to ten men midway through the first half when keeper Roman Berezovski was adjudged to have handled outside the area.

Ireland took the lead through an own goal and doubled their advantage through Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne in the second half.

Aiden McGeady swung over a cross from the right which evaded Armenia's substitute keeper Petrosyan before Dunne bundled in.

Armenia were given hope when Henrik Mkhitaryan guided a shot past Shay Given in the Ireland goal.

Kevin Doyle was sent off to even the sides after being penalised for raising his arm when jumping for the ball.

The red card means that the Wolves striker will miss a game at next year's finals if the Irish qualify.

Ireland did have the chance to snatch top spot from Russia but they brushed aside Andorra 6-0 in Moscow to top the group.
