Giovanni Trapattoni's side were outplayed for much of the match, with Shay Given making a string of saves to keep the scores level.
The home side did create chances, and Robbie Keane was guilty of missing the hosts' best opportunity when he headed wide from six yards.
The Irish face Russia in Moscow on Tuesday in what now looks like a must-win game.
