Rennes beat Reims in Coupe de France penalty shootout

Rennes beat Reims 5-4 on penalties in the Coupe de France at the Stade de la Route de Lorient after both sides played out a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Rennes have beaten Reims 5-4 on penalties in the Coupe de France at the Stade de la Route de Lorient after neither side could be separated by two hours of football that finished 1-1.

The hosts were quickest off the starting blocks when Pedro Henrique cut inside Christopher Glombard and fired a shot that skimmed just wide.

On the half-hour mark, the Brazilian midfielder was brought down in the visitors' box, prompting the referee to give Rennes a penalty, which Sylvain Armand duly drilled into the bottom corner.

Midway through the second half, however, Reims levelled proceedings when Grejohn Kyei charged towards goal and slotted past goalkeeper Benoit Costil.

Rennes pushed forward in a bid to retake the lead, but in the 78th minute, Abdoulaye Doucoure was unable to beat Kossi Agassa when one on one.

The sides could not be separated after 90 minutes, so the game went to extra time, and within the first four minutes, Gregory Bourillon put the ball in the back of the net only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.

Reims dominated the ensuing half-hour of football, but failed to make the breakthrough, and ultimately both sides had to be separated by penalties.

Costil proved the hero in the shootout as he pulled off three saves, while Anders Konradsen slotted home the winning spot kick to send the hosts through to the last 16 of the competition, where they will face Monaco.
