Sporting Gijon, Real Sociedad play out goalless draw

Sporting Gijon have held Real Sociedad to a 0-0 draw in La Liga.

Sociedad dominated the early exchanges and should have been in front when Jonathas wasted a good opportunity by firing high and wide.

Jony came close with a free kick for Gijon before Carlos Vela met a cross with a firm header which did not find the target.

Jonathas had another chance to put Sociedad in front when he fired over from the edge of the box before he forced Ivan Pichu into a good save with a close-range header.

Sporting nearly broke the deadlock when Miguel Angel Guerrero's shot from distance was saved by Geronimo Rulli, and Sergio Alvarez forced the goalkeeper into further action with an effort of his own soon after the start of the second half.

Jonathas failed to give his team the lead in the 68th minute when his header from six yards went wide of the top-right corner and his wasteful night continued when his long-range effort went wide of the target with just minutes to spare.
