Las Palmas claim first-leg victory over Real Sociedad

Las Palmas beat Real Sociedad 2-1 to claim the advantage at the halfway stage of their Copa del Rey fourth-round tie.

Las Palmas have taken the lead in their Copa del Rey fourth-round tie with Real Sociedad by winning the first leg 2-1 at the Estadio Gran Canaria.

It was Sociedad who took the lead in just the 11th minute as sloppy passing at the back gifted the ball to Mikel Oyarzabal, whose effort was blocked before Bruma reacted quickest to fire home.

Las Palmas responded well to the early setback and they were gifted the chance to get back on level terms when Asdrubal went down under a tackle from Diego Reyes.

The opportunity appeared to have been wasted when Oier guessed correctly to save Asdrubal's penalty, but the Las Palmas attacker slotted in the rebound to equalise.

More drama arrived before the half-time interval as Javier Garrido foolishly jumped into a tackle on Gonzalo Castro to hand the visitors a penalty of their own.

Raul Lizoain followed Oier's example by making a fine save to deny Ruben Pardo from 12 yards, and the hosts quickly cleared the danger to the relief of the home fans.

The winner arrived just five minutes into the second half as Nabil El Zhar beat a defender to create space on the wing before delivering a cross to Hernan, who headed home from close range.

Asdrubal continued to cause problems for the Sociedad defence, and only a fine save from Oier prevented him from extending the advantage with a powerful strike from the edge of the box.

Despite leading by just one goal, Las Palmas looked comfortable for much of the second half as they continued to test Eusebio Sacristan's side.

Sociedad's best chance to level the tie fell to Ion Ansotegi when he climbed highest to reach Bruma's corner, but the defender could only head wide as Las Palmas held on for a first-leg lead.
