Rafael Benitez appointed Real Madrid head coach

Real Madrid appoint Rafael Benitez

Real Madrid have confirmed that they have appointed Rafael Benitez as their new head coach on a three-year contract.

The 55-year-old replaces Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked by the Spanish giants last week after two seasons at the helm.

Benitez arrives at Santiago Bernabeu off the back of a two-year spell with Napoli, whom he led to fifth in Serie A last season.

The Spaniard began his coaching career with Madrid's B team before finding success with Valencia, guiding them to two La Liga titles and the UEFA Cup.

A statement on Real's official website read: "Real Madrid will present Rafa Benitez as the new first-team coach for the next three seasons today, Wednesday June 3."

Benitez has also managed Liverpool, Inter Milan and Chelsea during his career.
